This decision comes after an investigation by law firm WilmerHale into the circumstances surrounding Altman's abrupt firing in November.

The investigation has concluded, leading to the implementation of new governance rules and a strengthened conflict of interest policy. The board unanimously backed Altman's leadership, emphasizing its trust and confidence in him.

Employees, investors, and Microsoft, OpenAI's largest financial backer, had expressed shock over Altman's ouster, which was quickly reversed within days. Altman expressed his enthusiasm for the new board members, recognizing the important work ahead for OpenAI.

Joining Altman on the board are Sue Desmond-Hellmann, Nicole Seligman, and Fidji Simo, each bringing diverse expertise and experience to the company. They will complement current board members Adam D'Angelo, Larry Summers, and Chairman Bret Taylor.

The investigation by WilmerHale found that Altman's dismissal was not due to concerns about OpenAI's finances or product safety but stemmed from a breakdown in trust between Altman and the prior board. While the board acted within its discretion, Altman's conduct did not warrant removal.

In response, OpenAI is implementing new corporate governance guidelines, including a whistleblower hotline, and strengthening its conflict-of-interest policy. The specifics of these improvements were not disclosed.
