Dhaka, Mar 06 (V7N) – The capital’s fish and meat markets are witnessing sharp price hikes during the early days of Ramadan, raising concerns among consumers about rising living costs.
According to local vendors, the price of river fish has surged by 50 to 100 taka per kilogram in just one week, while farmed fish varieties have increased by 20 to 30 taka per kilogram. Popular items such as boiled fish are now selling at 600–700 taka per kg, and shrimp prices range from 800 to 1,200 taka per kg depending on quality. Large rui fish is priced at 600 taka per kg, while cutlet fish is being sold at 500–600 taka per kg.
The meat market has also seen upward trends. Beef prices have increased slightly to 800 taka per kg, mutton remains around 1,200 taka per kg, and both broiler and local chicken have risen by 30–50 taka per kg. Buyers expressed frustration over ongoing syndicate activities that continue to inflate prices even during the holy month, calling on the new government to take strict action to stabilize the market.
In contrast, vegetable prices have remained mostly stable over the past week. However, northern regions report lower prices, leaving farmers struggling to cover production costs. Lemons are priced between 80–100 taka per kg, with premium varieties at 160 taka. Green chilies and bitter gourd are over 100 taka per kg, while patal reaches 200 taka per kg. Other vegetables such as papaya, cabbage, and cauliflower are being sold at more affordable rates of around 40 taka per kg.
Market analysts warn that while vegetables remain steady, sustained price increases in fish and meat could strain household budgets during Ramadan unless regulatory measures are enforced.
