Dhaka, Feb 18 (V7N) – A group of writers, publishers, and cultural activists have demanded the release of poet Sohel Hasan Ghalib within 72 hours, warning of international action if their demand is not met.

Protest at Amar Ekushey Book Fair

The demand was made during a protest rally and human chain at Suhrawardy Udyan on Monday (February 17) as part of the Amar Ekushey Book Fair.

Publisher Mahabubur Rahman stated,
"If poet Sohel Hasan Ghalib is not released within 72 hours, we will also petition at the international level. Don't judge us by our numbers."

Arrest and Legal Proceedings

  • February 13: Police arrested Sohel Hasan Ghalib from Sanarpar in Fatullah, Narayanganj.
  • February 14: He was produced in court, where the investigation officer sought a 10-day remand.
  • Bail rejected: Ghalib’s lawyer applied for bail, but the court rejected it and ordered him to be sent to prison.
  • February 17: He was taken on a two-day remand.

Writers and Cultural Figures Speak Out

  • Writer Khaliquzzaman Ilyas stated,
"We have gathered here to protest against the arrest and remand of Ghalib. He must be released immediately."
  • Poet Chanchal Ashraf questioned the arrest, saying,
"Sohel Hasan Ghalib did not steal or commit corruption. Why was he taken on remand while big thieves and criminals roam free?"

The arrest stems from a poem published in 2024 by the publishing house 'Uzan'. The poem went viral on social media, leading to accusations that it mocked the Holy Prophet, sparking outrage.

The case has drawn significant attention, with concerns over freedom of expression and artistic censorship in Bangladesh.
