Dhaka, Mar 12 (V7N) –Workers of Golden Refit Garments Ltd blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in the Baghair Bazar area of Gazipur Sadar upazila on Wednesday morning following the death of a fellow worker in a road accident.
The protest began around 8am, with workers demanding justice for their deceased colleague, Jannatul Ferdous Tamanna, 32.
According to the protesters, Tamanna had requested leave the previous night from Assistant Production Manager Motiur Rahman to care for her sick child. However, her request was denied, and her factory-issued ID was taken away.
Then early in the morning, at around 5:40am, Tamanna was struck and killed by a truck and an autorickshaw while crossing the highway on her way to work.
Angered by the incident, her coworkers staged a demonstration, demanding the arrest of the truck driver and compensation for Tamanna’s family.
Industrial police personnel were on the scene.
Joydebpur police station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Halim said authorities were negotiating with the protesters to clear the highway.
