Dhaka, Apr 07 (V7N) – Former members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) staged a protest in Dhaka on Monday, blocking roads and demanding their reinstatement. The protest, which took place at the Shiksha Bhaban intersection, turned violent when the police intervened to break up the demonstration. At least seven people were injured during a lathicharge and with the use of sound grenades as the protesters attempted to break through a police barricade heading towards the Secretariat.
The injured include Ratan Kumar Deb (60), Motaleb Hossain (64), Ismail Hossain (59), Kamrul Islam (50), Mahfuzur Rahman (50), Kamruzzaman (42), and Sarwar (48). They were all taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College (DMCH) for treatment.
According to police sources, the dismissed members of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), which was later renamed Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), tried to march towards the Secretariat but were stopped by the authorities. As the protesters attempted to breach the barricades and continue their march, police dispersed them using force. However, the situation has now returned to normal.
These former BGB members were dismissed from service following the deadly Peelkhana incident in 2009, when a mutiny broke out at the BDR headquarters in Dhaka, resulting in the deaths of several officials. The dismissed personnel have been demanding compensation and reinstatement in the force, which has led to the ongoing protests, including roadblocks in the capital.
