Dhaka, May 13 (V7N) – The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has announced plans to construct separate sewage lines around the capital’s lakes, including Gulshan-Banani Lake, in a bid to curb pollution and restore water quality.
On Tuesday, DNCC officials, along with representatives from Dhaka WASA and Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK), conducted a joint visit to the project area to assess the current sewage and drainage situation.
Officials noted that the road stretching from the bridge on Banani Road No. 11 to the Karail slum is under RAJUK's jurisdiction. At RAJUK's request, DNCC will soon begin constructing a new drainage system in the area to improve waste management and prevent further contamination of the lake.
During the visit, DNCC officials expressed serious concern over the uncontrolled dumping of human waste directly into Gulshan-Banani Lake, which has turned the water into a “garbage dump.” To address this, DNCC announced a pilot project that will include the installation of a water treatment plant to purify lake water and prevent future pollution.
Officials also urged local residents to cooperate with the initiative to ensure its success.
It is worth noting that although multiple initiatives have been undertaken in the past to protect and restore Gulshan-Banani Lake, they have largely failed due to poor coordination and lack of enforcement.
