Dhaka, Jun 01 (V7N) – With just a week left before Eid al-Adha, cattle markets across the capital are gearing up for one of the year’s largest livestock trade seasons. This year, 20 cattle markets are being set up under the jurisdiction of Dhaka’s two city corporations, and preparations are already nearing completion despite weather-related challenges.

Heavy rain over the past few days has somewhat slowed the setup process, but organizers say the markets will be fully ready in time. Temporary shelters using bamboo and tents have been constructed to protect both livestock and traders from sun and rain. Farmers and cattle traders from across the country have begun arriving early at prominent markets, including the one in Tejgaon, hoping for better prices and early sales.

Many farmers said they arrived early to avoid the last-minute rush and to secure better spots in the markets. “We’ve come from Kushtia with 12 cows. Prices are unpredictable this year, but we’re hoping for the best,” said one trader.

Market lessees have assured that basic facilities like water, lighting, and security are in place. Measures are also being taken to maintain hygiene and order, which is especially important during the rainy season.

Following local objections and a court-issued ban, no cattle markets will be set up in Aftabnagar and Meradia this year. As a result, markets like Tejgaon are expected to see higher footfall from both buyers and sellers.

Despite the bustling preparations, traders remain cautious about livestock pricing. “Prices depend on demand in the last few days before Eid. It’s too early to tell,” said a leaseholder in Tejgaon.

With Eid al-Adha expected to be observed on June 7, authorities are urging both buyers and sellers to be vigilant, especially regarding fraud prevention and animal health. Veterinary teams are also expected to be deployed across key markets to monitor livestock health and assist farmers.
