Dhaka, July 27 (V7N) – Police have sought a 10-day remand for four expelled student leaders, including three former members of the Anti-Discrimination Students' Movement and one from the Bangladesh Democratic Students' Union (BUGHS), on charges of attempted extortion at the Gulshan residence of former Awami League MP Shammi Ahmed.

The remand petition was submitted on Sunday (July 27) by Inspector Mokhlesur Rahman of Gulshan Police Station, the investigation officer of the case. The Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court is scheduled to hear the petition in the afternoon.

The accused are:

  • Ibrahim Hossain Munna, former Dhaka Metropolitan Convener of the Anti-Discrimination Students' Movement

  • Md. Sakadaun Siam and Sadab, members of the same organization

  • Abdur Razzak Riyad, central committee member of BUGHS

All four were expelled from their respective organizations on Saturday following their arrest.

Alleged Extortion Plot

According to police, five individuals, posing as “coordinators,” went to the residence of former MP Shammi Ahmed in Gulshan-2 and demanded Tk 50 lakh in ransom, threatening to portray her family as corrupt collaborators of the ruling Awami League.

Since Shammi Ahmed is reportedly absconding, the group allegedly made their demands to her husband, Siddique Abu Jafar. Police say the accused had previously collected Tk 10 lakh in cash and returned again on July 26 to collect gold ornaments as part of the extortion attempt.

During the second visit, the household contacted law enforcement, leading to the arrest of four individuals. A fifth suspect, Kazi Gaurab Apu, managed to flee the scene.

Case Details

A case was filed at Gulshan Police Station by Siddique Abu Jafar, who claimed that the accused first came to his residence on July 17 and threatened him, forcing him to hand over Tk 10 lakh under duress. On July 19, they returned to demand the remaining Tk 40 lakh. Their final attempt on July 26 ended with police intervention.

The case accuses six people of criminal intimidation and extortion.

Background

The arrest and subsequent expulsions have stirred debate in student activist circles, with questions being raised about political manipulation and misuse of organizational platforms. However, police have stated that the investigation is ongoing and will proceed in accordance with the law.
