Dhaka, Aug 27 (V7N) – Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali has expressed regret over Wednesday’s violent clash between police and engineering students near the Hotel Intercontinental intersection as they marched towards Jamuna, the residence of the Chief Advisor.
Visiting the protesting students at Shahbagh on Wednesday night, the DMP Commissioner said an investigation committee will be formed on Thursday to look into the incident and ensure action against those responsible.
“As the Police Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, I am deeply saddened and regretful for the unpleasant incident that occurred in front of the Hotel Intercontinental. I will form an investigation committee tomorrow (Thursday) for today’s unpleasant incident,” he stated.
Alongside their three main demands, the protesting students have also called for the arrest of those involved in the detention and death threats against an engineer in Rangpur. Responding to this, the DMP Commissioner said he had spoken to the Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner.
“A GD has already been filed. The Commissioner assured me that the accused will be arrested as soon as possible,” he added.
Earlier in the evening, an 11-member student delegation held a meeting with Advisors Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan (Power, Energy and Mineral Resources) and Syeda Rizwana Hasan (Environment, Forest and Climate Change). However, as no final resolution was reached, further discussions with the government are scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
Advisor Fauzul Kabir Khan later told reporters that the clash was “undesirable” and assured that a police representative will formally apologize for the incident.
