Dhaka, Oct 13 (V7N) — Teachers of private educational institutions under the MPO (Monthly Pay Order) scheme are continuing their nationwide indefinite strike for the second consecutive day, demanding increased house rent, medical, and festival allowances.
As part of their ongoing protest, the teachers have announced a ‘March to Secretariat’ program to be held on Tuesday (October 14). The march will begin from the Central Shaheed Minar at 12 noon.
Leaders of the movement warned that if their demands are not accepted, they will launch an even stricter phase of agitation. “Our demands are logical and long overdue. No teacher will enter the classroom until the government announces a 20% house rent allowance, Tk 1,500 medical allowance, and a 75% festival allowance for employees,” they declared.
Tension had flared earlier on Sunday, when police clashed with protesting teachers and used sound grenades during a sit-in near the National Press Club. Following the confrontation, teachers moved to the Shaheed Minar and began a continuous sit-in from there.
Since Monday morning, teaching activities in schools, colleges, and madrasas across the country have come to a standstill. Although teachers are attending institutions, they are abstaining from classes and instead holding sit-in demonstrations on campuses and open fields.
