Dhaka, Dec 07 (V7N)- Higher secondary students from five major government colleges have blocked the Shahbagh intersection, protesting the proposed draft ordinance that follows the Dhaka Central University’s schooling model. Students claim the move creates deep uncertainty regarding the future of the higher secondary (HSC) classes in their institutions.

The blockade began at 11:30 am on Sunday (December 7), bringing traffic in the busy Shahbagh area to a standstill.

Five Colleges Participating in the Protest

  • Dhaka College
  • Government Bangla College
  • Kabi Nazrul Government College
  • Shaheed Suhrawardy Government College
  • Begum Badrunnesa Government Women’s College

Students from these institutions began demonstrations at their campuses early in the morning and later marched toward Shahbagh, where they joined forces to launch the road blockade.

Protesters said implementing the schooling model would eliminate HSC classes from the five government colleges entirely. They demanded immediate cancellation of the model and insisted that the independent structure of the higher secondary level must be preserved.

They also announced that their movement will continue until the authorities officially cancel the draft system.

Seven-College Students Also Protest for Dhaka Central University

Separately, students of the seven government colleges affiliated with Dhaka University have also taken to the streets today. They are demanding the quick promulgation of the ordinance to establish the proposed “Dhaka Central University.”

Although the ordinance’s draft has been published, students say there has been no conclusive progress, prolonging their identity crisis and academic uncertainty. They have announced a march and sit-in program toward the Education Building.

On November 12, the Ministry of Education announced a policy decision to establish Dhaka Central University by merging seven government colleges. The ministry also urged students to avoid rumors and maintain responsible behavior.

However, with no final approval yet, student unrest continues in multiple institutions across the capital.
