Dhaka, Feb 04 (V7N) — The High Court has issued a rule questioning why Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatani Jagran Jote spokesperson and former ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das should not be granted bail in a sedition case. The state has been directed to respond within two weeks.

The order was issued on Tuesday by a High Court bench comprising Justice Atowar Rahman and Justice Mohammad Ali Reza.

Chinmoy Das was arrested on November 25 last year in Dhaka, following a sedition case filed against him in Chittagong for allegedly insulting the national flag. The case, registered on October 31, named 18 others as accused. His arrest came after he led large gatherings of the Sanatani community in Chittagong on October 25 and in Rangpur on November 22.

Following his arrest, Chinmoy Das applied for bail, but the Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate denied it, sending him to prison. On January 2, the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court of Chittagong also rejected his bail application.

His imprisonment sparked tensions among his followers, leading to a violent clash between law enforcement, lawyers, and his supporters outside the Chittagong court premises. During the confrontation, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was tragically hacked to death.

Now, with the High Court's intervention, Chinmoy Das' legal team hopes for a favourable outcome in the coming weeks.
