Lawyer explains deteriorating mental health reason for absence in court
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arfatul Rakib court gave the order after the hearing on Wednesday afternoon. On this day, lawyer Abdullah Al Mamun asked for bail on behalf of Adam Tamizi Haque. During the hearing, lawyer Abdullah Al Mamun, representing Adam Tamizi Haque, requested bail on behalf of his client, citing Tamizi's mental health issues.
According to Mamun, Tamizi, who is undergoing treatment at the Beacon Point Drug Addiction Treatment Centre, was arrested on December 11, 2023. Due to his deteriorating mental condition, he has been kept under treatment with the supervision of law enforcement. Subsequently, the police sought a warrant to present Tamizi in court, and the court granted the request.
When asked if Tamizi was arrested while undergoing treatment, Mamun confirmed it. However, when questioned about Tamizi's non-appearance in court, Mamun explained that it was not feasible to bring him to the court.
Tamizi Haque's lawyer conveyed the court's displeasure with the law and order forces for what was perceived as a violation of legal procedures. On January 4, the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court ordered Adam Tamizi to be sent to jail.
At the same time, the court set a date for the bail hearing on Wednesday. Earlier, Adam Tamizi Haque was sent to a rehabilitation centre for a mental health test.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner and Detective Branch (DB) chief Md Harunor Rashid had said that a case was filed against Adam Tamizi for writing various things on social media, leading to his arrest by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB) Dakshinkhan police station. After his arrest, concerns about his sanity arose due to his behaviour and speech. Due to his drug addiction, he was sent to a drug treatment centre or rehab.
During the court proceedings, it was informed that DB believed he needed treatment due to his incoherent speech.
Subsequently, he was sent to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and Hospital for treatment on the court's orders. A board of nine expert doctors at the mental hospital examined him, and after the examination, the board members opined that he was still not mentally healthy and needed further treatment.
Consequently, he has been sent to rehab again. DB had detained Adam Tamizi Haque for questioning from his home in Gulshan, the capital, on the night of December 10, 2023.
