DHAKA, BANGLADESH, March 19 (V7N) — A Dhaka court on Thursday sent 11 accused to jail in connection with a case filed over vandalism and looting at the Uttara Square Shopping and Commercial Complex.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter passed the order after police produced the accused before the court and sought their detention until the completion of the investigation.
The accused are Md Monir Alam, Md Mojibur Rahman, Md Hridoy, Md Monjurul, Md Mohabbat Ali, Shah Poran, Md Shakil, Md Rashidul Islam, Md Saju, Md Liton and Jihad.
Earlier, on March 17, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin had placed the 11 individuals on a two-day remand following their arrest a day earlier.
According to the case statement, the incident took place around 9:00 pm on March 15 at the shopping complex located in Uttara Sector 13. A dispute reportedly began between a rickshaw puller and a security guard, which later escalated into violence.
At one stage, a group of rickshaw pullers allegedly attacked security personnel, vandalized the shopping complex, and carried out looting. The accused are said to have looted goods worth approximately Tk 15 lakh from two shops in the market.
Police also stated that the group assaulted law enforcement officers when they attempted to bring the situation under control.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
