Dhaka, Apr 09 (V7N) — The verdict in the high-profile murder case of Abu Sayeed, regarded as the first martyr of the July Movement, is currently being read out at the International Crimes Tribunal.
The proceedings are being broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV), drawing nationwide attention.
A three-member bench of the International Crimes Tribunal-2, led by Chairman Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, began reading the verdict at around 12:15 PM on Thursday. The other members of the panel are Md. Manjurul Bashid and Nur Mohammad Shahriar Kabir.
At the outset of the proceedings, the tribunal chairman made a poignant observation, stating that Abu Sayeed had stood with his hands outstretched, believing he was facing people, without realizing he was confronted by “inhumane individuals.”
In this widely discussed case, verdicts are expected against 30 accused, including former Vice-Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University Hasibur Rashid, former proctor Shariful Islam, former Assistant Sub-Inspector Amir Hossain, and former constable Sujan Chandra Roy.
According to case records, the investigation report was submitted on June 24 last year. Charges were formally framed on August 6, and the trial commenced on August 27. A total of 25 witnesses, including the investigation officer, testified during the proceedings.
The victim’s family has sought justice through the tribunal, and the nation now awaits the final outcome of the case.
