Dhaka, Sep 08 ,(V7N) — The government has appointed Supreme Court lawyer Tajul Islam as the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal, as revealed in an official notification issued by the Ministry of Law's Law and Justice Department on Saturday. The notification was signed by Solicitor Runa Nahid Akhtar.

In addition to Tajul Islam's appointment, four other lawyers—Mizanul Islam, Gazi Monawar Hossain Tamim, BM Sultan Mahmud, and Abdullah Al Noman—have also been appointed as prosecutors for the tribunal.

According to the official notice, Advocate Tajul Islam will hold the same status as the Attorney General of Bangladesh. Notably, he had previously served as the lawyer for Jamaat leaders during the tribunal proceedings under the previous government. Additionally, Tajul Islam has been actively involved in the newly formed Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party), where he served as the joint convener and led a legal team supporting the student movement for quota reform.

This appointment follows the passing of the previous Chief Prosecutor, Golam Arif Tipu, who died on March 15. Since his death, lawyer Syed Haider Ali had been serving as the Acting Chief Prosecutor of the tribunal.

The new appointments mark a significant change in the leadership of the tribunal, which continues to play a vital role in prosecuting war crimes committed during Bangladesh's 1971 Liberation War.
