Dhaka, Sep 21 (V7N) – Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman announced that since the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, there have been no reported extrajudicial killings in Bangladesh.

Speaking at an event in the Supreme Court's inner garden on Saturday, the attorney general remarked, "Since July 36 (August 5) to today, no one in Bangladesh has been a victim of extrajudicial killings. The primary credit for this achievement goes to Professor Dr Asif Nazrul, under whose leadership this has been made possible."

He highlighted that, according to both domestic and international organizations, more than 4,000 people were victims of extrajudicial killings by law enforcement agencies between 2009 and August 5, 2024. Additionally, over 700 individuals were forcibly disappeared, and more than six million were defendants in fabricated cases. "The darkest chapter of suppressing dissent involved curtailing freedom of speech, the right to assemble, and other fundamental rights," he stated.

The attorney general also expressed concern about certain judges who had previously played roles in suppressing citizens' rights under a fascist regime and still hold key positions. He urged vigilance from the legal advisors and the office of the chief justice to address these issues.

He concluded by calling for the resolution of the challenges judges currently face.
