Cox’s Bazar, July 13 (V7N) – Law enforcement agencies in Cox’s Bazar conducted two major operations on Saturday, resulting in the seizure of yaba pills worth over Tk 50 lakh and illegal Burmese cigarettes valued at Tk 9.6 lakh. A total of four individuals were arrested in connection with the smuggling activities.
In Teknaf’s Shahpori area, the Bangladesh Coast Guard intercepted a battery-operated easy bike during a special operation based on secret intelligence. Upon searching the vehicle, authorities recovered 10,000 yaba tablets and Tk 5,400 in cash. Two drug traffickers were arrested on the spot. Lieutenant Commander Harun-ur-Rashid, media officer at the Coast Guard headquarters, confirmed the arrests and stated that legal proceedings are underway.
Later in the day, Ukhia police conducted a raid in Holodiyapalong Union’s Dhurumkhali area, where they seized 480 cartons (96,000 sticks) of Burmese ‘Oris’ brand cigarettes stored at a private residence. Two suspects, Mahmudul Haque (48) and Shariful Alam (22), were arrested for allegedly stockpiling the smuggled goods. Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Arif Hossain of Ukhia Police Station stated that the suspects had been engaged in cross-border cigarette smuggling and were preparing the goods for distribution in local markets.
Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing in both cases.
