Ishwardi, Dec 03 (V7N) - Authorities in Pabna’s Ishwardi upazila have arrested and jailed Nishi Rahman, 38, who stands accused of killing eight puppies by placing them in a sack and drowning them in a pond. A local court has scheduled the next hearing for Sunday, December 6.

Rafiqul Islam, the G.R.O. of Pabna Amli Court-2, confirmed the court action and said that Rahman was produced before the court at around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday after being handed over by Ishwardi Police Station. Judge Tariqul Islam rejected her bail plea and ordered that she be sent to jail. The next phase of the case will be heard on December 6.

The case was filed late Tuesday night by Ishwardi Upazila Livestock Officer Aklima Khatun, who lodged the complaint after video clips and photographs of the incident went viral across social media. The complaint identifies Rahman as the sole accused.

Police arrested Rahman around 1:30 a.m. from a rented home in Ishwardi municipal area. She is the wife of Hasanur Rahman Nayon, an officer of the Small Farmers Development Foundation under the local Rural Development and Cooperatives Department.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Ishwardi Circle) Pronab Kumar said the case was initiated only after the incident gained widespread public attention online. He added that Rahman was taken into custody the same night and later produced in court after completion of preliminary legal procedures.

During early questioning, Rahman reportedly told investigators that she had placed the puppies in a sack and left them near the pond because she was disturbed by the constant barking and crying of the mother dog. She claimed she did not know who later threw the sack into the pond. Police said they are verifying her statement and continuing the investigation.

The mother dog, known locally as Tom, had been living for a long time near the Ishwardi Upazila Nirbahi Officer’s residence. She gave birth to eight puppies a week ago. On Monday morning, when the puppies could not be found, Tom was seen frantically searching, barking and crying across the compound.

Upazila staff later learned that Rahman had allegedly disposed of the puppies on Sunday night. On Monday morning, the bodies of all eight puppies were recovered from the pond beside the upazila complex.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Moniruzzaman said that following the incident, Rahman’s husband, Hasanur Rahman Nayon, was issued a written order on December 1 instructing him to vacate his government-provided residence. The couple left the quarters on Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing and further legal action will follow based on evidence collected in the coming days.
