Noakhali, Oct 15 (V7N): In an effort to protect the forests of Bhasanchar Island and reduce reliance on firewood, Qatar Charity (QC) has recently supplied cooking gas cylinders to Rohingya refugees on the island. This initiative, part of QC's broader relief efforts, benefits around 22,800 refugees by providing a safe and reliable source of cooking fuel, significantly improving their living conditions.
The project aims to promote safer cooking practices, moving away from firewood, which posed various risks, including safety concerns, difficulties in collection, and environmental damage. Samiya, a mother of three, shared her relief: "Before, we had to collect firewood, which was dangerous and time-consuming. Now, I can prepare meals quickly and safely for my children, and it has greatly improved our lives."
The initiative also addresses the environmental impact, as many refugees previously had no choice but to cut down trees for firewood. "We no longer need to damage the forests. I hope this project continues as long as we are here," Samiya added.
Hossain Ahmed, a 39-year-old refugee, expressed his gratitude: "Cooking gas allows us to prepare a variety of meals, making our daily routine more enjoyable. It brings hope and helps us feel more settled in this new environment."
Shabika Begum, an elderly refugee, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the security and ease that cooking gas provides: "We no longer need to search for firewood. I feel much more secure and can focus on my health and well-being."
Government officials have also praised the initiative. Md Maksudur Rahman, Assistant Camp in Charge of Bhasanchar Island, highlighted the significance of QC’s support, stating, "Qatar Charity's provision of cooking gas cylinders meets urgent needs, enhances safety, and significantly improves daily life for the refugees."
Qatar Charity’s efforts have had a wide-reaching impact, with their projects benefitting over 1.5 million refugees in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasanchar Island over the past five years. By supplying cooking gas, QC is addressing critical challenges, promoting health and safety, and fostering a sense of normalcy within the refugee community.
