MONGlA, Sept 03 (V7N) — The Mongla municipal unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) distributed 5,000 fruit tree saplings among students of various schools and colleges in Mongla on Wednesday as part of programmes marking the party’s founding anniversary.
The saplings were distributed in the morning among students of Chalna Bandar Model Secondary School by Md Zulfikar Ali, president of the Mongla municipal BNP and former mayor of the municipality.
Later, he distributed saplings among students of Mongla Government Women’s College. The initiative will be extended to students of other educational institutions across the town.
As part of the programme, Zulfikar Ali also planted a fruit tree sapling at each participating educational institution.
Speaking as the chief guest at the sapling distribution programme, Zulfikar Ali stressed the importance of tree plantation for protecting the environment and the Sundarbans.
“We have a ‘mother’, and that mother is the Sundarbans. The Sundarbans protect us by standing as a natural barrier against cyclones and tidal surges. But trees are being damaged, affecting the environment and oxygen supply. That is why tree plantation initiatives are necessary. Everyone should plant trees and take proper care of them,” he said.
He also praised BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, referring to him as the party’s prime minister, and said initiatives taken for the development of Mongla Port would contribute to its future progress.
He said an agreement signed during Tarique Rahman’s first visit to China would help advance the development of Mongla Port.
Among others, Upazila BNP President A. Mannan Howlader, Mongla Municipal BNP Organising Secretary Golam Nur Jony, BNP leaders Khorshed Alam and Jasim Uddin were present at the programme.
