Cox's Bazar, Oct 30 (V7N) — Thousands gathered on St. Martin Island Wednesday afternoon to protest recent government-imposed restrictions on tourism, particularly the ban on overnight stays, which has significantly impacted the island's economy. The demonstration began around 4 PM, drawing locals, business owners, and former officials united in their demands for a relaxation of the new restrictions.

Addressing the crowd, Habibur Rahman, a former Union Parishad member from St. Martin, voiced strong opposition to the government's decision. "I don't accept the decision taken by the government regarding St. Martin as an environmental crisis," he declared. "No tourist ships will be allowed to enter the island unless our demands are met. Tourists should have the opportunity to stay overnight and visit the island as before. We have to save our livelihoods."

Rahman also directed his comments to environmental adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, criticizing recent policy decisions. "No law should be made by disregarding the rights and voices of the people," he asserted.

This protest follows a human chain and mass march held on October 23 by students, local workers, and owners of hotels and restaurants, all advocating for similar demands. The island’s residents argue that the bans threaten their economic stability and call for immediate policy adjustments that balance both environmental preservation and economic sustenance.
