Chittagong, Nov 24 (V7N) — Hundreds of dismissed employees from Union Bank, Islami Bank, and Social Islami Bank protested on the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar Highway at Moizzartek junction in Anwara upazila on Sunday morning, causing heavy traffic congestion on both sides of the road.
The protest, which began around 9:30 AM, involved approximately 1,500 sacked officers and employees demanding immediate reinstatement to their positions. The protesters claimed they had been terminated following the fall of the government, despite being employed through due process.
According to their statements, 350 employees from Islami Bank, 672 from Social Islami Bank, and 262 from Union Bank were dismissed without prior notice. Protesters expressed frustration over the alleged unjust terminations and warned of stricter actions if their demands were not met.
Traffic on the busy highway came to a standstill for over an hour and a half before the intervention of army personnel and police at around 11:00 AM led to the protesters vacating the road.
The aggrieved employees insisted on their demand for reinstatement and hinted at continuing their agitation if no resolution is reached. Local authorities are yet to comment on the incident.
