Chandpur, Feb 28 (V7N) – In an effort to increase Hilsa production, the government has imposed a two-month ban on all types of fishing, including jatka harvesting, in the Padma-Meghna River Sanctuary from March 1 to April 30.

The restriction applies to a 70-kilometer stretch from Matlab Uttar Upazila to Char Bhairabi in Haimchar, prohibiting netting, fishing, buying, selling, storing, and transporting of fish during this period.

Government Assistance for Fishermen

Chandpur District Fisheries Officer Golam Mehedi Hasan confirmed that 44,000 registered fishermen will receive 160 kg of rice in four installments (40 kg each) as part of government food aid.

However, many fishermen have expressed concerns, stating that it is challenging to sustain their families on rice alone. They are demanding financial support alongside food aid and a low-interest loan scheme to compensate for their income loss.

Enforcement & Penalties

To ensure compliance, the district task force, comprising the fisheries department, district administration, naval police, and coast guard, will conduct regular patrols.

Authorities have also warned of strict actions against violators. Fishermen who illegally harvest fish during the ban period may face cancellation of their registration cards, barring them from future government assistance.

Awareness & Community Engagement

Awareness campaigns, including meetings, miking, and leaflet distribution, have been conducted across Matlab North, Matlab South, Sadar, and Haimchar upazilas to inform fishermen about the importance of jatka conservation.

The initiative is crucial for sustaining Hilsa stocks, but authorities may need to reconsider additional financial support measures to ease the burden on affected fishing communities.
