Tangail, May 11 (V7N) - The dire condition of numerous roads within Tangail Municipality has reached a critical point, causing significant daily hardship for a wide range of people, from students to working professionals.
Despite repeated assurances from the Tangail municipal authorities, tangible improvements have yet to materialize. In certain areas, the roads are so severely damaged by loose stones that pedestrian movement is impeded. In others, even light rainfall renders them impassable for rickshaws, motorcycles, and ambulances.
On-site observations reveal that the road stretching from the municipality's district headquarters to the LGED intersection, along with Park Bazar-College Para, Thana Para, Adalat Para, Kagmara, and several other thoroughfares within the city, have deteriorated into a series of potholes. Rickshaws, auto-rickshaws, and other vehicles navigate these routes with considerable difficulty, leading to public frustration directed at the municipal administration.
Rickshaw drivers Alamin Mia and Jewel expressed their anger, stating that these roads have been riddled with potholes for an extended period without any action from the authorities. They highlighted the extreme difficulty of transporting passengers on such broken surfaces and the risk of rickshaws overturning with minimal movement, endangering both passengers and themselves. They recounted an incident from the previous week where a schoolgirl fell from a rickshaw and broke her arm, resulting in the local community confronting and assaulting the rickshaw driver.
CNG driver Nurul Islam described the district headquarters road as being in a "pitiful condition." He noted that driving on such a road causes significant damage to his vehicle and makes transporting patients particularly challenging.
A pedestrian in the Park Bazaar area commented on the road's vital importance to the municipality, serving thousands of residents and hundreds of traders. He attributed the public suffering to the municipality's indifference. Sattar Mia, a raw materials trader, explained the difficulties in transporting goods to Park Bazaar due to the poor road conditions, with van rickshaws often refusing to come or demanding exorbitant fares.
Tangail Court lawyer Mir Mosharraf Hossain highlighted the severely खराब condition of the road within the court premises, noting that the railings have detached, leaving exposed rods that pose a safety hazard. He reported occasional accidents caused by these rods.
Shahin Chowdhury, General Secretary of District Sadar Ward No. 1 BNP, emphasized that this road in the district headquarters is used by residents from 15 to 20 villages, as well as people from the northern part of the district traveling to the court. He stressed the significant hardship faced by the general public due to the long-standing pothole-ridden state of the road. He also mentioned the municipality's occasional dumping of garbage on the road, which gets washed away with minimal rain. He urged the Tangail municipality authorities to undertake immediate repairs.
In response to the situation, Tangail Municipality Administrator Shihab Raihan stated that he is aware of the poor condition of the roads and assured that repairs will be carried out quickly in a phased manner.
