RAJSHAHI, 23 May (V7N)– The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested two individuals suspected of involvement in the kidnapping, beating, and subsequent killing of a murder suspect who was forcibly taken from police custody in Bagmara, Rajshahi. The arrested individuals are Khorshed Alam (45) and Bhuttu Pramanik (42), both from Goalbari village in Atrai upazila of Naogaon.
They were apprehended in the Rahattarpul area of Chittagong in the early hours of Tuesday, May 20, and subsequently handed over to Bagmara Police Station on Wednesday morning. The pair had reportedly been in hiding in Chittagong for approximately a month following the incident.
A press release from RAB-5 stated that the arrests were made during a joint operation by RAB units from Rajshahi and Chittagong. Their location was identified through video footage and intelligence information.
The incident in question occurred on the afternoon of April 4, when Amirul Islam, also from Goalbari village, allegedly killed fish trader Abdur Razzak with a sharp weapon at Bagmara's Ranshibari Bazar, stemming from a previous rivalry. Following the killing, local residents apprehended Amirul and detained him in a house. Later, around 8 PM, as police attempted to rescue Amirul and transport him to the police station, a crowd of over a hundred people attacked the officers, snatching Amirul from their custody. He was then publicly beaten to death with sticks and bricks. Six policemen were injured in the attack.
Bagmara Police Station has filed a case against 1,200 unknown individuals in connection with the incident.
Bagmara Police Station OC Touhidul Islam confirmed, "The two accused arrested in the case filed by the police were taken to court on Wednesday afternoon."
