Chilmari, August 14 (V7N) — Persistent rain since on Wednesday night, coupled with a poorly managed drainage system, has left large parts of Sabuzpara in Chilmari’s Thanahat Union severely waterlogged, causing immense suffering for pedestrians, students, and daily commuters.
By morning, rainwater mixed with clogged drains overflowed onto key roads, including the stretch from the local temple to Thanahat Bazaar. Students were seen wading through knee-deep dirty water to reach schools and colleges, drenched and visibly distressed.
Despite the presence of a drainage system in the area, locals say it remains ineffective due to lack of maintenance. “Every year during monsoon, this is what we face. The drains overflow, and the road breaks apart. Nothing ever changes,” said a resident. Others echoed frustration, noting that despite repeated media coverage, authorities have failed to implement a lasting solution.
The road has also deteriorated in several places, increasing the risk of accidents and injuries. “It’s not just an inconvenience—it’s dangerous,” said a commuter, adding that many avoid the route altogether during the rainy season.
In response, Chilmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sabuj Kumar Basak acknowledged the recurring issue and said, “Measures were taken previously, but we will reassess the situation on-site and take further action.”
Residents are urging urgent repairs to the drainage system and road infrastructure to ensure safe movement, especially for students and the elderly.
