Leaders of the All-Party United Committee address a press conference at Bagerhat Press Club, announcing peaceful protest programs demanding the reinstatement of four parliamentary constituencies — Bagerhat, August 19, 2025.
Bagerhat, Aug 20 (V7N) – The All-Party United Committee in Bagerhat has called for the restoration of four parliamentary constituencies in the district, claiming that the current reduction in seats has left the local population politically marginalized. The demand was formally raised during a press conference held at Bagerhat Press Club on Tuesday at 10:30 AM.
Reading from a written statement, the committee's convener, Engineer ATM Akram Hossain Talim, said that restoring the four constituencies is essential to ensure fair political representation based on the district’s population size and geographic diversity. He criticized what he described as politically motivated administrative decisions that reduced the number of constituencies, depriving many of their democratic rights.
To press their demand, the committee announced a phased series of non-violent protest programs. In the first phase, on Thursday, August 21, a road blockade will be held from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM on the Katakhali–Nawapara highway, covering parts of Rampal and Mongla upazilas.
The second phase of protests is scheduled for Sunday, August 24, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. During this phase, the Fakirhat–Nawapara–Katakhali highway will be blocked, alongside several other key locations including the Kachua Signboard intersection, the premises of the Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner’s office, the local Election Commission office, the Mollahat–Chitalmari road, and the Mollahat Bridge area.
In addition to local demonstrations, the group announced its participation in a central protest in Dhaka. On August 24 and 25, demonstrations and sit-ins will be held in front of the Election Commission headquarters to draw national attention to the issue.
Speakers at the press conference included Member Secretary Sheikh Muhammad Yunus and former district BNP president and coordinator M A Salam, among others. They asserted that Bagerhat’s reduced representation in the Jatiya Sangsad has diminished the district’s political voice and urged citizens from all walks of life to support and join the movement.
The committee confirmed that their protest will continue until their demands are met and called upon residents of Bagerhat to unite in pursuit of their rightful representation.
