Jhalokathi, Oct 10 (V7N) – The iron plates of the long-abandoned iron bridge adjacent to No. 36 Baro Koibartkhali Government Primary School in Rajapur upazila of Jhalokathi have been left exposed for years, raising concerns among local residents about theft and decay.
According to locals, the bridge was constructed many years ago but has since become unusable for vehicular traffic. A new bridge was later built nearby, leaving the old iron structure unprotected. Over time, several iron plates and parts of the bridge have been stolen, while remaining sections have begun to rust due to prolonged exposure to the elements.
Residents expressed concern over the loss of public property, noting that if the remaining iron components are not promptly recovered and preserved, the entire structure may eventually collapse or be completely destroyed. “The iron plates are now rusting, and many sections have already been stolen. These materials should be recovered quickly and properly preserved by the government,” said one resident.
Another local added, “If no maintenance or protective measures are taken, the remaining parts of the bridge will also deteriorate. These usable materials could still be salvaged and repurposed for government projects.”
Community members have urged the upazila administration to take immediate action to recover and reuse the remaining iron components of the abandoned bridge to prevent further loss of public assets.
The neglected bridge not only represents a waste of government resources but also poses a potential safety hazard, as unattended structures can attract vandalism and unauthorized activity. Prompt recovery and proper preservation of the materials could contribute to sustainable use in future infrastructure projects.
