Jhalokathi, Oct 16 (V7N) – Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami organized a human chain on Wednesday morning in front of the District Commissioner’s office in Jhalokathi, demanding the implementation of a five-point agenda, including the proportional representation (PR) system and holding a referendum.
Hundreds of party activists and local residents participated in the hour-long program, carrying banners and placards. Speakers at the event criticized the government, alleging that the move to conduct a referendum and national elections on different dates served the agenda of a single political party. They claimed that the government is walking a path toward unilateral elections.
The speakers warned that if a referendum is not held in November and national elections do not take place in February, citizens may peacefully surround the residence of the Chief Adviser as a form of protest.
Advocate Hafizur Rahman, Amir of Jhalokathi District Jamaat-e-Islami, stated that the human chain represents the third phase of their campaign, demanding the inclusion of the PR system in the national charter and five-point agenda through a referendum. He added that if the government ignores these demands, the party’s central committee may announce stricter measures.
Other senior leaders present at the event included Deputy Amir BM Aminul Islam and Secretary SM Farid Uddin, among others. The participants emphasized that meeting the five-point demands would relieve the nation from political crisis and serve the interests of all citizens, not just the party.
