Habiganj, Oct 20 (V7N) – Advocate Aminul Islam, central vice president of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Lawyers’ Forum and senior lawyer of the Supreme Court Appellate Division, is being discussed as a potential BNP nominee for the Habiganj-4 constituency, comprising Madhabpur and Chunarughat upazilas.

Sources say that he has been conducting extensive public outreach and campaigning across both upazilas. He is actively working to implement the 31-point program announced by BNP’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman.

Local BNP leaders highlighted that during the previous Awami League administration, Advocate Aminul Islam provided legal support to party activists who were victims of attacks, false cases, and imprisonment. His consistent support has earned him significant trust and acceptance among grassroots party workers.

Advocate Aminul Islam’s spouse, Advocate Sufia Akter Helen, was twice elected as the BNP-supported vice chairman of Madhabpur Upazila Parishad. Although she did not contest the last upazila election due to the party’s decision, she remained actively involved in movement-related activities.

Habiganj-4, encompassing tea gardens and areas along the India border, has historically relied heavily on tea workers’ votes, which largely supported the Awami League. This time, with the Awami League not fielding a candidate, Advocate Aminul Islam is intensively campaigning in tea garden areas to consolidate support.

Former joint general secretary of Habiganj District Chhatra Dal, Shah Azizur Rahim, said, “For the past 17 years, Advocate Aminul Islam has remained connected with grassroots activists, standing by them during the oppressive policies of a fascist government. His nomination would reflect Tarique Rahman’s grassroots-focused politics.”

Sufia Akter Helen, vice president of Madhabpur Upazila BNP, added, “We did not participate in the last upazila election as per party directives. We stood by leaders and activists affected by attacks and cases. We hope the party recognizes Advocate Aminul Islam’s support during difficult times and nominates him. His nomination would ensure BNP’s victory in this constituency.”

Chunarughat Upazila BNP General Secretary, Advocate Mir Siraj Ali, said, “Aminul Islam is a charismatic and popular leader, respected by both young and senior citizens. If the party nominates him, a political shift favoring BNP could occur in Madhabpur-Chunarughat. Since independence, BNP has never won here, but his candidacy could change that history.”

Political analysts note that his strong grassroots connection, credibility in the legal community, and dynamic campaign efforts position Advocate Aminul Islam as a formidable BNP contender for Habiganj-4 in the upcoming election.
