Barguna, Oct 30 (V7N) – A massive 16-kilogram pangash catfish was caught in a fishing net in the Bishkhali River, located in the Kalamenga area of Patharghata Upazila. Due to the high quality and taste of river-caught pangash in the region, the fish was sold at Tk 940 per kilogram.
The catch was purchased by Mojibur Rahman, a local hotel owner in Barguna town, for a total of Tk 15,000. Rahman stated that fishermen from the Bishkhali and Payra rivers regularly sell large-sized pangash to his hotel, which has become popular among visitors from nearby and distant areas for its fresh river fish. “This morning, the huge pangash was brought to my hotel, and I bought it at the standard rate of Tk 940 per kilogram. Large pangash is always in demand here, and many customers come from afar to enjoy it,” he added.
Mohsin, the Fisheries Officer of Barguna district, explained that the Bishkhali, Baleshwar, and Burishwar (Payra) rivers are known for pangash fishing throughout most of the year. He noted that during this season, larger pangash are more commonly caught because the 22-day government-imposed fishing ban restricts fishing activity, allowing fish to feed freely and grow larger. Additionally, the abundance of small fish during this period provides a rich food source, prompting pangash to migrate where food is plentiful.
The catch highlights both the rich biodiversity of Barguna’s rivers and the seasonal dynamics of river fishing that contribute to the local economy.
