Jhalokathi, Oct 26 (V7N) — Nasim Uddin Akon, the suspended general secretary of the Rajapur Upazila unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was killed in a tragic road accident on Saturday morning. The incident took place around 11:45 a.m. at the Nalbunia intersection on the Rajapur-Bhandaria Highway.

According to police and local sources, Akon was returning to Rajapur on a motorcycle after inspecting a construction site in the Nalbunia area. A Patherghata-bound “Hamim Paribahan” bus, reportedly speeding from Dhaka, hit the rear of the motorcycle, causing Akon to be thrown off balance. He was flung onto the base of a roadside tree and then into a nearby ditch. Locals rescued him from the muddy water and rushed him to Rajapur Upazila Health Complex in critical condition.

Dr. Abul Khair Russell of Rajapur Health Complex confirmed that the injured BNP leader was given first aid and immediately referred to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMC). However, doctors at the emergency department declared him dead upon arrival.

Shahidul Islam, the motorcycle rider who was also injured in the accident, said they had just left the Nalbunia area when the bus struck them from behind. “The impact was so strong that Nasim Akon was thrown off the motorcycle. People nearby ran to help and took him to the hospital,” he said.

Rajapur Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Abul Malek confirmed the accident, saying, “The motorcycle carrying Nasim Akon was entering the main road when the fast-moving bus hit it from behind. Akon suffered a fatal head injury after striking the tree. Police are on the scene, and efforts are underway to identify and seize the bus and its driver.”

The tragic death of Nasim Akon has cast a pall of mourning across Rajapur upazila. Members of the Rajapur Journalists’ Club, various social organizations, and local residents expressed deep sorrow and condolences.

BNP’s Central Secretary for Religious Affairs, Rafiqul Islam, said in an emotional statement, “We are devastated. Nasim was a pillar of strength for the local BNP and a trusted leader of the people. His death is an irreparable loss to the party. May Allah grant him Jannah.”

Akon’s funeral prayer is scheduled to be held on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. at the Rajapur Pilot School field.
