Rangamati, May 4, (V7N) — Tensions erupted in Rangamati city following the announcement of a new Bangladesh Nationalist Chhatra Dal (BNCD) district committee after eight years, leading to clashes between rival groups and prompting the district administration to impose Section 144 in the Banarupa–Kathalatoli area.

The central Chhatra Dal announced the new committee at midnight on Saturday. By Sunday morning, deprived leaders and activists began protesting, demanding the committee’s cancellation. In the afternoon, they blocked the road in front of the party office for over an hour. District BNP leaders Advocate Saiful Islam Panir and Advocate Mamunur Rashid Mamun tried to calm the situation and later contacted central president Rakib, but protesters issued a 24‑hour ultimatum.

When no decision came by Monday afternoon, supporters of the new committee staged a celebratory procession. Clashes broke out between the two sides, forcing law enforcement to intervene. To prevent further escalation, the District Magistrate imposed Section 144, restricting gatherings in the affected area.

OC Jasim Uddin of Rangamati Kotwali Police Station confirmed that announcements were made through miking and additional forces deployed. The situation is now calm.
