Rajshahi, June 12, 2026 (V7N): Rajshahi division has scrapped the traditional ‘dholon’ system in mango trade, under which farmers were long forced to give extra mangoes beyond the standard weight. From now on, mangoes will be bought and sold strictly by kilogram, officials announced Tuesday.

The decision was finalized at a meeting held in the conference room of the Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner’s Office. Divisional Commissioner Dr. A. N. M. Bazlur Rashid presided over the session. “Ensuring fair prices for mango growers is the administration’s main goal,” he said.

How Farmers Were Losing Out

Officials explained that under the ‘dholon’ custom, wholesalers would pay for 40 kg but often take 44 to 54 kg from farmers. This caused significant financial losses for growers. Under the new rule, every kilogram will be accounted for, with a fixed commission of Tk 3 per kg for wholesalers.

The meeting was conducted by Additional Divisional Commissioner (Overall) Mohammad Habibur Rahman.

Who Attended

Also speaking at the meeting were: Rajshahi Range DIG Mohammad Shahjahan, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Fayezul Kabir, Rajshahi DC Kazi Shahidul Islam, Naogaon DC Mohammad Saiful Islam, Chapainawabganj DC Abu Saleh Md. Musa Jangi, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Marketing Rajshahi Division Shahana Akhtar Jahan, Chief Scientific Officer of Fruit Research Centre Rajshahi Dr. Shafiqul Islam, and Sundarban Courier Service AGM Mahmudul Alam Sajal.

Administrative officials, mango growers, traders, and representatives from relevant departments of Rajshahi, Naogaon, Natore, and Chapainawabganj were present.

Stakeholders expressed hope that implementing the decision will fulfill the long-standing demand of mango farmers and bring transparency to the region’s multimillion-taka mango trade.
