Cox's Bazar, July 8 (V7N)- At least seven students were killed and several others injured after a landslide struck a madrasa inside a Rohingya refugee camp in Cox's Bazar on Wednesday, as days of heavy rainfall continued to trigger landslides and widespread disruption across southeastern Bangladesh.

The incident occurred around noon in Block A-3 of Rohingya Camp No. 5 in Kutupalong, Ukhiya Upazila. According to local authorities, the landslide buried part of the madrasa during ongoing rainfall.

Two units of the Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the scene and carried out rescue operations. The injured were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment. Authorities are continuing rescue efforts and assessing the extent of the damage.

Meanwhile, relentless rainfall has severely disrupted normal life in Rangamati and other hill districts.

Landslides have forced the closure of several key roads connecting Rangamati with Bandarban, Rajasthali, Khagrachhari, Mahalchhari, Baghaichhari and Longadu, leaving many areas temporarily isolated.

Strong currents in Kaptai Lake have also led authorities to suspend small boat services, while prolonged rainfall has inundated several low-lying areas, causing waterlogging and hampering transportation.

In response to the deteriorating weather conditions, the local administration had already suspended travel to the popular tourist destination of Sajek Valley from Tuesday as a precaution against landslides and other rain-related hazards.

Authorities have urged residents in landslide-prone areas to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow official safety advisories as heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the coming days.
