Patharghata, Aug 19 (V7N) — A 1.5-kilogram hilsa fish was sold for Tk 4,882 at the BFDC Fish Landing Centre in Patharghata, Barguna, on Monday.
The fish was purchased by fish wholesaler Md Shimu from Shammi Fish Arat at the Patharghata BFDC fish landing centre. It had been caught by fishermen in the Baleshwar River near Patharghata late on Sunday night.
According to Md Shimu, the hilsa was brought to the fish market in the morning for auction. The auction price was set at Tk 1.40 lakh per maund. He later purchased the fish through the auction and sent it to Kashiani Market in Gopalganj, hoping to make a profit from its resale.
Local fishermen said fishing in the sea and rivers has been disrupted by a series of low-pressure systems since the end of the 58-day fishing ban. As a result, many fishermen have been unable to go fishing regularly.
The catch of the large hilsa has brought some relief to the fishing community. However, fishermen said the number of large hilsa caught this year remains lower than last year.
Golam Mostafa Chowdhury, president of the Barguna District Fishermen’s Trawler Owners’ Association, said the catch of a large hilsa was encouraging news for fishermen.
“Large hilsa are now being caught not only in the deep sea but also in coastal rivers,” he said, adding that fishermen were still not getting the expected volume of fish.
He expressed hope that the fishermen would catch more hilsa in the coming days.
