Pabna, Sept 28 (V7N) – Industrialists and businesspeople in Pabna held a human chain on Sunday demanding the immediate removal and eventual dismissal of Shamim Hossain, acting deputy general manager (DGM) of the Pabna BSCIC Industrial Estate, over allegations of irregularities, corruption and taking bribes.
The demonstration was organised in the Pabna BSCIC Industrial Estate area in the afternoon under the banner of the Industrial Owners’ Association, BSCIC Industrial Estate, Pabna.
Speakers at the programme alleged that Shamim Hossain had long been abusing his authority and was involved in various irregularities and alleged bribery.
They demanded that he be removed from his post immediately, followed by a proper investigation into the allegations and exemplary punishment if the allegations are established.
At the end of the programme, the protesters warned that if the official was not transferred and dismissed soon, all mills and factories at the Pabna BSCIC Industrial Estate would be shut down and a tougher movement would be launched.
Business leaders Johurul Islam Bacchu and Abdus Selim addressed the human chain.
M A Mannan, a member of the convening committee of the BSCIC Mill Owners’ Committee and president of NASIB, Abdul Khalek, Md Abdullah, Shafiqul Islam, Suk Chandra, Bharat Ghosh and Professor Oliul Islam, among others, expressed solidarity with the programme.
Around 100 mill owners and local businesspeople took part in the demonstration.
Contacted over the allegations, Shamim Hossain said he had no problems with ordinary businesspeople.
Regarding the more than 100 mill owners and businesspeople participating in the protest, he said, “I do not consider them genuine businesspeople or mill owners.”
He declined to provide further comment, saying he would not make any statement on the matter.
