Continuous rain has caused the Surma River to overflow, flooding various areas in Sylhet and causing water to inundate Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Shah Sajib Hossain, a meteorologist at the Sylhet office of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, reported 226.6 millimeters of rain in the 24 hours to 6am on Monday, with an additional 28mm in the following three hours. The BMD classifies rain above 88mm as very heavy.
The Surma River at the Sylhet point was flowing 13 centimeters above the danger level at 9 am, according to the Bangladesh Water Development Board.
The ground floors of buildings at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital were submerged, disrupting services, said Brig Gen Dr. Mahbubur Rahman Bhuiyan, the hospital director. He noted that despite previous appeals for action after last year's floods, no measures were taken, leading to repeated waterlogging issues.
Relatives of patients expressed concerns about overcrowded conditions and the risk of disease from contaminated water.
