Lakshmipur, Sep 14 (V7N)– Continuous rainfall over the past two days has submerged low-lying areas in Lakshmipur, raising fears of another round of flooding. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department recorded 36.4 millimetres of rain in Ramgatti within the last 24 hours, as confirmed by Senior Meteorological Observer Sohrab Hossain on Saturday afternoon.

The region has been experiencing heavy rains due to a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal, which prompted a warning signal No. 3. Monsoon activity is expected to continue through Sunday, increasing the risk of further waterlogging.

Several areas, which had recently seen floodwaters recede, have again been inundated following heavy rainfall on Friday and Saturday. Waterlogged roads have disrupted traffic, and approximately 300,000 people across 20 unions and 10 municipal wards remain affected by the rising waters.

Local residents, including those from the villages of Rajapur and Jamir Tali in Laxmipur Sadar Upazila, report receiving little relief assistance. Despite water levels in the river being below the danger mark, the situation remains dire as canals are obstructed, hindering the flow of water and prolonging the flooding.

"The water had barely receded, and now the continuous rain threatens to flood us again," said Mohsin Mia, a resident of Rajapur.

Executive Engineer of the Water Development Board, Nahid-uz-Zaman, noted that while river levels are fluctuating with the tides, the situation has slightly improved. Efforts are underway to clear the canals and drain water from the affected areas. However, the rising water in the Meghna River poses a risk of erosion.
