PABNA, July 28 (V7N) – The University of Science and Technology in Pabna (PUST) has decided to permanently dismiss Assistant Professor Subrata Kumar Biswas from the Department of Social Work following allegations of sexual harassment.

The decision was taken during the university’s 73rd Regent Board meeting on Saturday, July 26, but the university authorities have yet to formally announce it.

Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, the university’s Vice Vice-Chancellor, stated on Monday afternoon that the board discussed and passed the resolution regarding the professor’s case. “Once the resolution is officially documented, it will be communicated publicly. I cannot provide further details at this moment,” he said.

Investigations revealed that Subrata Kumar Biswas had a long-term romantic relationship with a postgraduate female student from the Social Work Department. The relationship included physical intimacy under the promise of marriage. Later, however, Biswas refused to marry the student.

On September 22 last year, the student filed a written complaint against Biswas to the department chairman accusing him of sexual harassment. On September 23, an academic council formed an investigation committee to examine the allegations. The committee recommended on October 9 that Biswas be relieved from all academic duties pending further action.

A separate inquiry by the university’s Sexual Harassment Prevention Cell confirmed the validity of the allegations. Based on their findings and under the “Sexual Harassment and Prevention Policy, 2008,” they recommended the permanent dismissal of Biswas.

Subrata Kumar Biswas could not be reached for comment despite multiple calls and messages on Monday afternoon.

Registrar Bijon Kumar Brokkho said, “Once the Regent Board’s resolution reaches my office, we will consult legal advisors and officially notify the professor of his permanent dismissal.”

Chairperson of the Social Work Department, Khadizatul Kubra, said, “We received the written complaint at the time and conducted an internal investigation, which initially confirmed the allegations. We submitted the report to the university administration, and since then, the professor has been suspended from all responsibilities.”

This case highlights the university’s commitment to enforcing policies against sexual harassment and maintaining a safe environment for students and staff.
