Afterward, wreaths were laid one after another at the memorial by the university administration, Zia Parishad, University Teachers’ Association of Bangladesh (UTAB), Officers and Employees Association, various academic departments, residential halls, and student wings of different political organizations. Following the wreath-laying, participants observed a one-minute silence and offered prayers seeking eternal peace for the departed souls of the martyrs.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Nakib Muhammad Nasrullah said December 14 remains one of the most significant and painful days in Bangladesh’s history since independence in 1971. He noted that at the final stage of the Liberation War, the Pakistani occupation forces and their local collaborators brutally killed the country’s leading intellectuals. He added that the intellectuals sacrificed their lives with the hope of building an independent, self-reliant, and democratic Bangladesh, and expressed prayers for divine mercy upon them.
