Dhaka, Jan 04 (V7N)—The Election Commission (EC) of Bangladesh has decided to investigate irregularities and shortcomings in all elections, including the three controversial national elections held in 2014, 2018, and 2024.
The EC has instructed its 10 regional election officers to examine the reasons behind the decline in the electoral system and submit detailed reports.
This decision was made during a recent meeting involving Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin and other election commissioners, according to media reports.
Following the meeting, the CEC issued written directives, asking regional officials to identify past irregularities and deficiencies and report their findings to the EC secretariat.
The 10th National Election, held on January 5, 2014, the 11th National Election on December 30, 2018, and the 12th National Election on January 7, 2024, are widely regarded as some of the most controversial in the country’s history.
The 2014 election saw a boycott by the BNP and allied parties, resulting in one-sided voting and the unopposed election of 153 candidates, an unprecedented occurrence in Bangladesh’s electoral history.
The 2018 election, though inclusive of all parties, was marred by allegations of rigging and came to be known as the "midnight election," with the BNP and its allies winning only seven seats.
The 2024 election faced criticism for allegedly fielding dummy candidates from the ruling Awami League as opposition representatives, enabling the party to secure a fourth consecutive term in office, while the BNP and like-minded parties abstained.
Following the reconstitution of the EC under AMM Nasir Uddin, demands for a thorough investigation into these elections were raised by civil society, media representatives, and prominent individuals.
They stressed the need for electoral reforms and accountability to restore public trust.
In his directive to officials, the CEC emphasized the importance of delivering free, fair, and impartial elections, urging field officers to utilize their experiences effectively.
He said: "You have witnessed both good and flawed elections. Adopt the good practices and discard the bad ones. The EC is committed to earning the nation’s trust by delivering transparent elections. Field officers must always be prepared to organize elections at short notice."
Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah highlighted the need for the EC to understand the reasons behind the decline in the electoral system, pointing to negligence, incompetence, and malicious intent as potential factors.
He emphasized the importance of proactive measures to prevent similar issues in the future.
The newly formed EC under AMM Nasir Uddin, which assumed office on November 21, has already initiated several reform measures while preparing for the 13th National Election.
