Dhaka, Nov 09 (V7N) — Election Commission (EC) Secretary Akhtar Ahmed has urged Tarique Rahman, member secretary of the Aam Janata Dal, to end his hunger strike and file a legal appeal regarding his party’s registration issue.
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters at the Election Commission office in Agargaon on Sunday (November 9).
Akhtar Ahmed explained that the Aam Janata Dal’s registration was denied under specific conditions, but emphasized that any aggrieved political party or candidate may appeal at any time through proper legal channels.
Earlier, on Tuesday (November 4), after the final review, the Election Commission decided to grant registration to three new political parties — the Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP), the Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist), and the Bangladesh Aam Janata Party. A public notice will now be issued in newspapers inviting objections before the registrations become final.
On that same day, Tarique Rahman’s Aam Janata Dal was excluded from the registration list, prompting him to begin a hunger strike at the main gate of the Election Commission building in Agargaon that afternoon.
