CTH, Mar 27 (V7N)- A ship carrying 62,150 tons of wheat from the United States arrived at the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port on Saturday, boosting Bangladesh’s efforts to meet its growing food demand. The wheat was imported under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Bangladesh government and the United States.
This latest shipment follows a previous delivery of 58,457 tons of wheat under the same agreement, reflecting continued cooperation between the two countries to ensure food supply stability.
Chattogram Port Authority Secretary Syed Refayet Hamim confirmed that authorities have already begun testing samples from the shipment. He added that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure the quick unloading of the cargo.
According to port sources, the wheat will be distributed between two major ports. Of the total shipment, 37,290 tons will be unloaded at Chattogram Port, while the remaining 24,860 tons will be transported to Mongla Port for offloading.
Sources further said that a total of 467,884 metric tons of wheat has already arrived in the country under the government-to-government (G2G) agreement. This includes 237,845 metric tons and 230,039 metric tons imported in two separate phases.
Bangladesh’s annual wheat demand is around 70 lakh tons, while domestic production is only about 10 lakh tons. To meet the shortfall, the country relies heavily on imports, with both the government and private sector sourcing wheat from international markets.
