DHAKA, March 27, (V7N) — Members of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested five people and recovered a large portion of stolen gold ornaments during a drive conducted by Lalbagh Police Station in the capital on Friday.

The arrestees were identified as Mosammat Rozina Akter (42), Meem Akter (23), Md Al‑Amin (23), Md Kashem Ahmed (28), and Md Nahid (33). Police said the incident occurred on March 23 at a residence in the Azimpur Government Officers’ Quarters.

Rozina Akter allegedly entered the house posing as a domestic worker and later left, claiming she would visit another flat. When she did not return, the homeowners checked their valuables and discovered a suitcase opened and a box containing gold ornaments missing.

The stolen items included two chains, a bangle, three rings, two bracelets, two pairs of earrings and a locket, weighing around nine bhori and eight ana, with an estimated value of Tk 25 lakh. A case was filed with Lalbagh Police Station.

Based on CCTV footage, intelligence inputs and technology‑based analysis, police conducted drives in Hazaribagh, Khilkhet and Tongi East areas on Friday and arrested the suspects.

During the operation, police recovered eight bhori and twelve ana of stolen gold ornaments. Among the recovered items, a chain with locket, a ring and a pair of earrings were seized from Kashem Ahmed, while a chain, bangle, ring, two bracelets and two pairs of earrings were recovered from Nahid.

Police said most of the stolen gold has been recovered and efforts are ongoing to trace the remaining items. Preliminary investigation suggests the arrestees are members of an organised theft ring.

Assistant Police Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Arifa Akhter Preeti confirmed that legal action against the accused is underway.
