JHENAIDAH, May 31 (V7N) – Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman today said the prosecution would seek the highest possible punishment for those accused in the sensational Ramisa rape and murder case, whose trial is scheduled to begin tomorrow.

“We expect that the available evidence will ensure the maximum punishment for the accused,” the minister said.

He made the remarks while addressing a financial assistance cheque distribution programme as the chief guest at the auditorium of Shailkupa Upazila Parishad in Jhenaidah. The programme was organised by the Jhenaidah Zila Parishad.

During his speech, the minister also said the government had requested the opposition party to nominate five members for the constitutional amendment committee.

“They informed us that they would announce their decision later. We are now waiting for their response,” he said.

Md Asaduzzaman further stressed the need for collective efforts to combat drug abuse, saying there would be “no compromise” in the fight against narcotics.

“It is the responsibility of all to protect society and the state from the menace of drugs,” he added.

The minister also announced that the government plans to provide family cards to 40 million households across the country as part of its public welfare commitments.

He said farmer cards had already been introduced in various areas and would gradually be expanded nationwide. He also mentioned plans to provide government allowances to imams of mosques and priests of temples.

Jhenaidah Zila Parishad Administrator M A Majid presided over the programme.

Among others, Deputy Commissioner Md Noman Hossain, Shailkupa Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Mahfuzur Rahman, senior joint general secretary of Jhenaidah BNP Abdus Salam Biswas, Upazila BNP General Secretary Humayun Babur Firoz and Officer-in-Charge of Shailkupa Police Station Humayun Kabir Mollah attended the event.
