Madrid, May 29 (V7N)- Two years after lifting the UEFA European Championship trophy in Berlin, Spain national football team are now fully focused on the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America under coach Luis de la Fuente.
Following years of disappointment after their historic 2010 World Cup triumph, Spain appear to have rediscovered their identity with a more direct, dynamic and modern style of football, moving beyond the limitations of their once-dominant tiki-taka system.
Spain will begin their Group H World Cup campaign against Cape Verde national football team at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on June 15.
De la Fuente’s tactical blueprint
Coach Luis de la Fuente is expected to continue with his trusted 4-3-3 formation, focusing on possession football combined with pace on the wings.
In goal, Unai Simón remains the first-choice goalkeeper, although strong competition from David Raya and Joan García has strengthened Spain’s options between the posts.
Defensive reshuffle without Real Madrid stars
One of the biggest surprises in Spain’s squad is the absence of players from Real Madrid CF, reportedly a first in the national team’s history at a major tournament.
Veteran defender Aymeric Laporte is expected to partner young Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsí in central defense.
With experienced right-back Dani Carvajal unavailable, competition for the position is likely between Pedro Porro and Marcos Llorente. On the left flank, Euro 2024 final hero Marc Cucurella remains a key figure.
Midfield remains Spain’s greatest strength
Spain’s midfield continues to be regarded as one of the strongest in world football.
Pedri has returned to top form after recovering from injury, while Rodri remains the midfield anchor despite recent fitness concerns.
The third midfield role is expected to be contested between Gavi and Fabián Ruiz, with Mikel Merino also offering tactical flexibility.
Injury concerns over Yamal and Nico
Spain’s biggest concern ahead of the World Cup revolves around star wingers Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, who played a major role in the team’s recent success.
Both players reportedly suffered injuries late in the season, creating uncertainty about their availability during the early stages of the tournament.
If they fail to recover fully, players such as Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres and Yeremy Pino may take on greater attacking responsibilities.
Up front, Mikel Oyarzabal is expected to lead the line as Spain’s primary striker after establishing himself as a reliable scorer in major matches.
Strengths and weaknesses
Spain’s youthful attacking energy and technically gifted midfield make them one of the strongest contenders for the 2026 World Cup.
However, analysts believe the team’s heavy dependence on wing play could become a weakness if Yamal and Nico Williams are not fully fit. Questions also remain about defensive stability during counter-attacks in the absence of experienced leaders like Carvajal.
Still, under De la Fuente, Spain appear determined to restore their place among football’s elite on the biggest stage once again.
