Sylhet, Aug 6 (V7N)- State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam has said the government aims to complete elections for all five tiers of local government within the current fiscal year.
"The government is committed to holding elections for all five tiers of local government within this fiscal year," he said while speaking to reporters after visiting the Secondary Transfer Station of Sylhet City Corporation's waste management facility at Parairchak in South Surma.
He said the sequence of elections would be determined after August through consultations involving the Local Government Division, the Finance Division, and the Election Commission.
Commenting on national politics, Alam said there is no opportunity for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to return directly to the country without facing legal proceedings, adding that any action against her would be carried out in accordance with court rulings and the country's legal process.
During the visit, the state minister praised Sylhet City Corporation's waste management system as one of the best among city corporations in Bangladesh, highlighting its achievements in waste management, dengue prevention, cleanliness drives, and canal restoration. He also inspected the progress of the country's first bio-drying plant and exchanged views with officials on the project's implementation.
Among those present were Local Government Division Joint Secretary Md. Robiul Islam, SCC Secretary Md Ashik Nur, Chief Engineer (in charge) Md Ali Akbar, Chief Engineer (mechanical) Retired Lt. Col. Mohammad Ullah, and Executive Engineer (electrical) Joydeb Biswas.
