TEKNAF, Aug 02 (V7N) — Police recovered a partially decomposed unidentified body from the embankment area of Shah Porir Dwip in Sabrang Union of Teknaf Upazila, Cox’s Bazar, on Saturday.
The body was found at around 1:00pm near the embankment and was recovered after locals informed authorities. Residents said the body had apparently drifted ashore with tidal currents and became trapped against concrete blocks along the embankment.
Some locals suspected that the deceased could be among those missing after a recent boat accident involving Rohingya refugees attempting to enter Bangladesh from Myanmar. However, police said the identity of the body has not yet been confirmed.
Sabrang Union Acting Chairman Abdul Mannan said he informed Teknaf Model Police Station after receiving reports from local residents. Police later arrived at the scene and recovered the body. He suspected that the victim might be a Rohingya individual, but the identity remains unknown.
Teknaf Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Islam said police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy to determine the cause of death and establish the identity of the deceased.
The recovery comes after a boat carrying Rohingya people reportedly sank near the Teknaf coast on Friday while they were attempting to enter Bangladesh from Myanmar’s Rakhine State. Eighteen people were rescued alive, while nine others remain missing, according to local authorities.
